Serious Irony: Henry Louis Gates’ Arresting Officer Teaches “Racial Profiling”

No, not a how-to. James Crowley, the Cambridge police officer who hauled Henry Louis Gates to jail for breaking into his own house, teaches police recruits in Lowell, Mass., a class on how to confront racial issues on the job.

I saved all of my comments for my own blog.  There are so many sites and blogs that I wanted to leave comments on, but I thought it would just be better to put them all in one place.

My comments are as follows:

1. It was the arresting officer’s job and duty to find out where Mr. Gates lived.
2. He (the cop) could have placed him in the back of the police car until he verified.
3. If  Mr. Gates was upset, the cop could have given him a ticket, to say the least.
4. I do believe emotions ran high and that the officer acted with emotion instead of logic.  Logic would suggest anyone in Mr. Gates’ position would be upset.
5. Someone had to be the bigger person here.  Someone should have stepped in and stopped this.  Someone could have, but didn’t.
6. Honestly, I think they were bored and what a piece of action this was.
7. But, as with all decisions…there is a cost.
