Seriously Picks: Not-So-Ghetto Holiday Gift Ideas

December 2, 2008

I heard that we are in a recession.  The country, I mean.

Well, I have known that for the last 8 years.  How the heck is Washington just now finding this out???

Anyhoo, I thought about what you could do for people that won’t cost a ton of money.  Heck, I can do better than Oprah and O magazine…

Here’s how you do it…

  • You have to put the people you will be giving gifts to in a select catagory.

They will be in one of three catagories:

  • The Sentimenal Catagory

Those in the sentimental catagory are the easiest to give gifts to.  Why?  Because, these people will appreciate anything they get that was handmade or baked or home made.  You get the picture?  More often this is a granny or auntie.  Paint a canvas for them if you paint or bake a plate of their favorite cookies using the freshest ingredients.  Make a pair of earrings or sew a pillow.  They’ll love it.  You’ll know what to do for your sentimental folks.

  • The Materialistic Catagory

This catagory can be the expensive ones to buy for.  They are the gadget or game system lovers or those that keep dropping the “I could use a new cell phone from Santa” hints. They might also be the brand name lovers of clothing or perfume.

I suggest this following: either come right out and ask what they want and buy it or get them a gift card to their favorite store.  Now, gift cards are nice, but they look weenie sitting under a tree.  Aside from what I suggest above, get them a gift of something in their area of interest.  If they love books, go to a used book store and get some nice selections, wrap them up and stick them under the tree with the gift card on top.  Or, if they like brand name clothing, head to your local upscale resale shop and get them something nice.  Don’t forget to wrap it and put it under the tree with the gift card on top.  They will more than likely open the gift card first and fall in love with that so much that the other gift will be a sure fire hit.

  • The “Anything Goes” Catagory

These are our DOLLAR STORE family and friends.  Make a gift basket with an array of pretty tea cups and saucers and throw in a variety of boxes of delicious teas.  You could make your own Pepperidge Farm type gift baskets.  Use fruit, sausages, nuts, teas, candies and more.  What about a grooming gift basket?  Get the toothbrushes, shower gels, soaps, washclothes, shampoo…you get it, don’t you?  The baskets are a dollar, the cello wrap is a dollar.  You can get funky and get creative here.  They will love it.

Alright, get to work.  It’s now December…we are counting down to the big day!

Love and hugs,

I love the Anything Goes category. Those are usually the ones who don’t like big expensive things but are impressed with gifts you bought because you had them in mind and what they would actually like…nothing too hard, keep it simple.

I actually thought about doing a few baskets for Christimas this year..I better start soon if I want to actually get them done though

What about the Obligatory Category — folks you wouldn’t do anything for if you didn’t have to and so, well, I guess that also puts them in the Regift Category??
