Sneak Peek: Jaden Smith Is The New ‘Karate Kid’
I don’t particularly like remakes and this one is no exception. I will make a wee bit of an exception for Jackie Chan and Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, in the new “Karate Kid” movie.
Let us all hope. All of us who were able to witness the glory of the original films about a coming of age tale of a young man…let us collectively pray that this will be worth viewing. Let us hope that this will not go under the rug or give me the feeling of wanting to wax-on and wash-off this film from my memory.
What I will give credit to is our man Jackie Chan, who I would cast in the role myself. If ever there were someone to take this role…well, I would say that Chow Yun Fat would be a close runner-up.
Jaden Smith says:
“I trained every day for four months with Master Wu [the film’s fight coordinator],” Jaden, 11, tells PEOPLE as he takes on his first leading role as an American boy named Dre Parker who moves to China. “We did a lot of stretching.”
In the photos released by Columbia Pictures, Jaden, who plays Dre, can be seen high-kicking and laughing with his co-stars.
The film, released in June next year, will borrow elements of the original plot.
In it, a bullied youth, played by Jaden, learns to stand up for himself with the help of his eccentric mentor, played by Jackie Chan.
Chan will play Mr Han, based on the character Mr Kesuke Miyagi, which won Pat Morita an Oscar nomination in the original film franchise.
